fuel pressure question

I have a 98 a6 2.8 engine. I removed the gauge cluster and sent it out for repair and the car sat about 2 weeks. After reinstalling them, the car turned over but would not fire, as if it had no fuel. After turning over and over and pressing the gas, it started, but rough. After a few minutes it ran smooth. I let it run for a while, then shut it off and it started right back up. Any idea what the prob coyld be?

Just prior to removing the cluster, did you briefly start the car to move it a few feet?

I drove it but not just prior to the removal. It sat for quite a few hours before I took them out. And once removed, I didnt even put the key in the ignition.

The timing isn't relevant. I should have asked:

Was the last time it ran prior to the removal only for a brief minute or two?

If that is the case, the behavior is normal.

totally normal, let me car sit for a week and a half in really cold weather, started really hard and sounded like CRAP for 10 min, idle was lumpy etc etc and then when it warmed up it was fine

The 2.8 engine was known for this. If it sits for a while, the carbon on the valves flake off. When you go to start it, it sounds like low compression, then slowly fires up and then smooths out. There was a old VW TSB for installing a hotter thermostat for this issue. I think on the Audi side, they changed the injectors to a different type also.
