Default Google Earth Navigation Maps

Friends,

So, it's been almost a week since I picked up my car. I have messed around with Audi Connect. It's an amazing service, although, I don't think that I have much use for it, other than the fact that I love the Google Earth navigation view... I don't think that only this is worth the monthly data charge, however. Is there some way to download the maps onto an SD card or the car's internal HD? Even if it's just for the state I live in? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Congratulations first of all

I currently don't have a data plan with the car, or at least I think I don't, because the online search function and hotspot don't seem to work. However, I am still able to get google earth maps. Also, check out a thread here called tru phone Sim, which allows you to buy a pay as you go data plan, so you pay for what you use rather than an expensive monthly fee.

Yup, what Mettalic-Force mentioned is the only other way...until Audi decides to open up the internet access via our current smartphones rather than locking to T-Mobile. A VERY long shot but still hoping they do that.

In an email exchange I had with an Audi Canada rep, I was told that that Audi Connect would NOT be coming to Canda for the 2012 & 2013 model years because of the lack of a nationwide compatible carrier. (Here in Canada, the only compatible carrier to T-Mobile is a carrier called "Mobilicity" that operates mainly in the major metropolitan areas) - Definitely a hardware issue, and not a software one.

This same rep told me that a carrier agnostic version of the MMI will be coming for the 2015 model year, and that it would NOT be backwards compatible to the "old" vehicles.

The maps are already on the cars harddisk, all you get from the connection is Google Earth overlays, online destinations and information. You can use the nav system regardless of whether you have the Connect active.

I thought that they already have Smartphone based Audi Connect in Europe.

Since T-Mobile is a 3G provider and so is AT&T, I am sure they can open up to A&T via software. But like you said, they won't.

And yes, no way are any of changes (or even software updates) typically backward compatible. Auto companies don't ever want to do a software update unless the owners show that there is an actual issue with the software in their car. You just have to figure out some issue (to make up) get get a new software update

Not exactly. AT&T and T-mobile operate their respective 3G networks on different frequencies (AT&T 3G operates at 850 & 1900 MHz; T-mobile 3G operates at 1700 & 2100 MHz) so as far as 3G data speeds, it is a hardware limitation.

You can put an AT&T SIM card in the Audi and it will work - just at the backward compatible 2G (EDGE) speeds - not at 3G speeds.

Yeah...well you're right on that. I guess I'm asking for them to remove limitation where folks with smartphones can just use the data plan and not have to go with a separate sim card.

I'm sorry, I must have not asked the question clearly. What I meant was, after the AudiConnect trial expires, (and assuming I'm not using any alternative means of internet connectivity such as TrueSim) will the Google Maps Navigation views still be there? Or does it switch back to the native navigation maps. For example, suppose I have driven in my neighborhood and viewed it on Google Earth Nav view, does that get stored and come up later, even if I'm not connected to the internet via AudiConnect? Is there anyway to download the (Google Earth view) maps on an SD card prior to the Audiconnect trial expiring? I still have pretty much a 6 months trial, but I'm sure it goes by quick, that's why I'm wondering. Did anybody who let their subscription trial expire comment on this? Do you still get Google Earth views?
