Default Xenon versus LED
For those that have read my previous thread about rebuilding the entire front end of my 2012 A6, I am wondering if if would be possible to purchase and install the LED headlights instead of the Xenon version which is what the car originally came with. Are there any differences on the switches, etc. other than the physical headlight units?

I read somewhere on that to switch to LED lights isnt as easy as changing the headlight casing... somebody said it would cost around $8k

I too have read that $8K price thrown out there for the pair of LED headlights. Best best is to check at the parts counter.

I would guess that the wiring harness feeding the lights is completely different.

You're a pioneer - let us know what you find.

How can the price difference be 8K when Audi charges only 1400 for the difference? I'll be curious as well wrt. what you find.

Don't forget that when you opt for the LED upgrade, the Xenon set is already in the original price...so it's $1400 extra. I'll be buying the LED's straight out.

Right now, the Xenon kits, including the 2 Xenon bulbs,2 ballasts, and the actual headlight units are $3825 List. So at this price and adding the $1400 upgrade to LEDs its only $5200. Far from the $8k number being put out there.

I'll continue my research and let you know.

Probably the same reason that after you decide on a price when buying a house... Every change you make is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than the decided price. Even something like wanting to put in a electrical socket, which is a little more difficult than during prewiring...As a matter of fact, that's how builders make a majority of their profit...

As an example of the cost, here's a eBay auction for the R8 OEM LED headlights for $5k. You would still need the LED controller and wiring harnesses.

Other than the look, it's not a major difference. Paying 5k for something thats worth 1,400 is major waste.

My brother got a 2012 m3, I'll take pics to compare his adaptive Xenons and my LED.

If you did upgrade to the LED's, you could sell your Xenon units to offset the total cost.
