Default Timing belt and water pump poser

I need some advice here please. In my search for a coolant leak on the right side of my 2001 A6 2.8l 30v I placed the car in service position and even swung the whole front carrier out of the way so I can sit on a 5 gallon bucket and ponder. It appears that the leak is coming from the after run coolant pump hose. My original assumption was that the leak was coming from the t-stat or water pump so I got all the parts and tools to do a timing belt etc. Hence the question. According to the servicing dealer the belt was done at 80,000 and the car now has 110,000. Do I go ahead and do the timing belt etc. or just fix the leaking hose? Everything looks good at the water pump and t-stat.

You're real issue is what will do more good / less harm. Another recent post here shows that it's not hard to cause another problem while fixing the principal one (see https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=2822583 ). 30,000 miles is way too early to re-do the TB - fix the real problem. It should be pretty simple since you've already gotten easy access to the engine. I'd replace the defective hoses / clamps and check out the pump itself since that's known to fail and leak.

The pump and t-stat areas are dry and show no signs of leakage. The after run pump area is all wet and I suspect that water dripping down through the alternator probably shortened it's life as well. Got a new one coming in today. It was toast.

Default Leak

Are you sure that you have diagnosed the correct cause of your leak? I thought only the turbo engines came equipped with After Run Coolant Pumps? In your thread you listed your car as an 01 with a 2.8L 30V

yes the car has an after run pump for sure. My Audi expert also questioned that but when you hear it running and hear radiator juice flowing it's sort gotta be an after run pump. That area is pretty juicy too.

Yeah he's an expert for sure. I think he has probably built 6 or 8 of them and may have one of the only non-VIN Audis in this country. That's his track car. The pump is between the alternator and the secondary air pump. But just to clarify the situation I did find that the t-stat was leaking so I went ahead and did the whole deal. T-stat, water pump and timming belt etc. etc. What fun.

what terrible advice to give about anything timing belt related lol. But if it was just done that soon ago than i would have left it all alone. Good job on doing it all though, I always find it so hard to NOT do all that stuff when in that far. even if its not due.
