Default The rebuild continues!

Once again for those of you following my rebuild saga, I had a chance to visit the car and discover a whole bunch of damaged parts in the trunk! This was a wonderful surprise. Because, among other things, the two fans were there on a broken frame. And at $750 each (yes, $750!!) that was a major find. All in all, I recuperated about $5000 of parts.

But one of those parts has me completely stumped. Its a pump of some kind and it didn't have any visible part number on it. So I am appealing to all you experts to help me identify it.

Here's the picture.

Thanks all.

I don't know what the pump is for but it looks like it goes into the box on the drivers side above the frame rail. You have a roll of tape under it.

edit: Maybe not - that might be a radiator connection now that I see a similar one on the passenger side under the frame rail.

Well apparently it is an air pump that connects to the large air intake box on the passenger side. It sucks air from 2 "Kombi" valves , one on either side of the engine, and resends the air back into the intake.

This must be a way to re-burn some exhaust gases to reduce emissions. But that's just an educated guess on my part. I have no idea where this pump installs but I need one and it costs $420!

What happens if you hook up the plumbing and you don't have a working blower motor? There might be enough vacuum to draw whatever fumes there are into the engine.

What does a "Kombi" valve do? Recirc exhaust gas (EGR) or engine fumes (PCV)?

Default Diagram of pump

I'm afraid your questions are beyond my knowledge of this car.
Here is an image of that parts page where you can see the connections between the pump and the 2 Kombi valves.

If anybody has a more technical explanation of the purpose of all this, please share!

Well the parts order is in and I'm impressed. I bought a total of 120 parts. All but 11 were in stock in the US. And of the 11 parts, 2 were air bags and the rest were just bolts. They have to come in from Germany. 7-10 day delay with no extra freight charges. Not bad at all.

I would like to mention that of all the people I talked to for this order, two people stood out from the rest in terms of service and information(Audi USA Parts and Benzel Busch). But the top notch customer service award winner, by a land slide, was Jeff from Audi Usa Parts. He provided VERY detailed information about parts I MAY require, complete parts list I DID require, lots of exploded diagrams and all in a VERY timely manner.

Unfortunately, because he is on the west coast and I am on the east coast, I could not afford to give him the order. But he deserved it.

So if any of you need OEM Audi parts, go straight to him!

I did a search and found out that the Kombi valve does the job of a EGR valve but it meters the flow as required. The ordinary EGR valve is a check valve.

FYI - browsing ebay -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-OEM-...item2ebc2d020a

They have left and right xenon assemblies for sale. Probably MUCH cheaper than new.
