Default Why a vast difference in recommended spark gap?

Sorry to revisit the much belated issue of spark plug gapping.
Just wondering why my Bentley Service manual recommmends a gap of 0.016" - 0.024" on my 2001 2.8l 30v ATQ engine. Seems so small!(yep I checked the manual 3 times) Other members have posted very different recommendations for the ATQ on this site, supposedly based on the Bentley manual as well. The most common I see is 0.032". Should I disregard my Bentley manual when I install my new 0.040-gapped NGK(BKR6EGP)plugs? I'm looking for power AND fuel economy -- too much to ask?

I've always left them at stock gap. Also, the ATQ engine calls for NGK BKR6EKUB spark plugs. If you use something different, then use the gap the spark plug manufacturer sets them at. I think 0.032 is the normal gap. Some are 1.1mm gap, but the plug part number will end in -11, at least for NGK that is.

I chose these plugs because NGK's site shows them as one of the options specifically compatible with my vehicle. I think I'll do that then, leave them at the preset gap and see how it runs. From what I've read a larger gap will generate a hotter spark. (gap = electrical resistance = heat) more gap, more heat -- as long as the gap isn't so large the voltage fails to arc. I'll try to follow up with a post on the results.
