Advice needed for transmission repair

Default Advice needed for transmission repair

It is probably a long shot but maybe someone has been in the same or similar position. The car is a 2001 A6 Avant- 150K. The transmission was going while back (18 months or so)so I parked the car and when I had time addressed some other motor related issues. Once I confirmed that the motor is solid I decided to look for a used transmission as a rebuilt was out of the question. After a year or so of searching (I have the lovely EKD code) I found a suitable replacement with only 86k on it. I paid $600 for it and was told that the doner vehicle blew the head gasket and had a cracked block. I picked this up and took it into my local indy who is giving me a good price on pulling and replacing the transmission. He has had it for quite some time and just got around to installing it last week. The bad new is this transmission is showing the same signs of failure that is common with these ZF transmission. It had a slight oil leak around the pump and the bushing (some call it sleeve) from the pump spun off onto the converter. I couldn't tell when I picked up the transmission as the converter felt tight (secure) to the pump. I asked him to pull the pan and check to see if there is much metal present. The fluid seems to be ok, not too dark, just a medium brown from what I have seen.

I am looking a buying a rebuilt converter from ZF which should have the upgraded seals. I would also need to buy a pump. I found a new ZF pump for about $150 but want to make sure that any an all seals are upgraded.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to look for these seals or a supplier that offers the pumps with these seals.

Call Eriksson Industries for ZF parts. If the TC bushing spun in the oil pump housing, you can have it repaired via aftermarket parts. I think Transtar sell the bushing (machined pump housing with oversize bushing installed) or replace the pump. Either way, the valve body has to come out along with the driver's axle shaft in the transmission to remove the oil pump assembly. Eriksson also rebuilds the TC with updated ZF parts. You may want to perform other repairs if you open the transmission. The D/G drum can be inspected for cracking once the valve body is out. If it is cracking, you will start to loose reverse gear.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I already had downloaded the pdf for the transmission and this is my same one.

I will look at Erikssons for the TC and pump. I had found the new ZF pump for sale online and would assume that this would come with an oversized bushing but just wanted to check out another supplier or two.

Thanks for the tip re: D/G drum. I will be having a local transmission specialist install the new pump as this is beyond me and will ask him to check the drum.
