Default Changing Aux Fan on 98 A6 2.8L

Can the Aux Fan be changed without removing the front end?

I'm hoping to take care of this after work today.

Thanks in advance!

Absolutely (at least it did in my '99 A6). Just rotate it a few degrees to unlock it from the bracket; this is pretty obvious if you are watching it. Then follow the connecter down and around the main radiator fan (I was changing my oil, so I had easy access to all the clips that hold the wires in place and keep them from going into the fans) and up near the ABS/Washer Fluid side. Once the lead wire is free you can wiggle it out pretty easy, it's a tight fit but it's very doable.

I had it out and back in in under 30m (i didn't have a replacement yet but wanted to see how easy it would be to replace it).

Thanks! Did you pull the fan up and out or down and under the car?

btw, your car looks just like mine. Same color. Nice.

So i twisted the fan out of it's bracket, pushed it out 1/2 an inch (away from the front to clear itself of the bracket clips), and then wiggled it out the top.

Oh i forgot!! There is ONE philips screw holding it in. It's right at the top and you can see it if you look closely. It was a pain to get out, but a stubby screwdriver is enough clearance. Definitely the hardest part was getting this screw out (but it wasn't really that bad).

Thanks for the help nm! I tackled this job on Saturday and it took me about 2.5 hrs only because the new fan wouldn't sit properly in the holes of the mounting shroud. The bottom part of the fan wouldn't go into it's hole but I was finally able to squeeze my arm all the way down there to push the plastic catch piece into the hole.

I routed the wire over the main fan shround instead of under. I also noticed that with this new fan my AC doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner when running. It's very, very quiet now. :-)
