Default 2000 A6 4.2L Warm Start Problem
Recently our 2000 A6 4.2L has been having a warm start issue. It starts right up when it's cold but once the engine warms up it won't start up again for a couple hours. When I turn the key it does absolutely nothing. It doesn't try to turn over or fire. Once it's cooled down it fires right back up and drives great. There is no CEL and it isn't throwing any codes. I've searched and found several possiblities but none of them seem to quite fit the problem. Anyone have an idea?

Coolant temp sensor is bad. Replace it. Won't throw a code or CEL light.

Took you advice and changed the ECT this morning. No change. Still starts when cold and won't crank when warmed up. Noticed a clicking sound coming from lower passenger side of engine when turning the key. What should I try next?

Did you change the green one on the passenger side by the firewall?

Time to look at CPS crank position sensor. Other possibility, alternator, fuel pump.

Yes I changed the green one. I will try the CPS next.

Check the starter and starter connections and voltages to the starter/solenoid.

If the starter does not turn, the issue has nothing to do with temp sensors, codes or the ECU.

It sounds like a starter issue. I have a used one if you need it.

You may have a problem with your transmission shift linkage. Next time this happens, try putting your gear selector in neutral and then try to start the car.

@ 4Driver4 Starter was my first thought. Is there any easy way to check? How much would you like for your used one?

Arguably that wouldn't be shift linkage but the neutral safety switch or whatever Audi used to perform that function.
