1998 Audi A6 oil leak
I got this car 1 yr ago 150k miles. It was not up to date with maintenance so:
I purchased the tb and valve cover cam shaft seal kits from blauparts. I took my time, used rented tools, followed the install directions, applied black rtv to specified areas, cleaned the heck out of everything and performed a meticulous job. So my 1998 A6 has new valve cover gaskets, can tensioner gaskets, half moon seals, new cam seals and plugs, new timing belt, new water pump, new idler, crank shaft seal, and new breather system (hose chck valves, pump). In addition, I replaced the lower oil pan gasket, removed cleaned and re-sealed the upper oil pan with Audi supplied $34/tube white sealant.
No oil leak was evident for first 10 mile test run. Went on a 75mile trip yesterday. UG!! Oil coming from the front of the engine. The leak is not coming from the valve covers(cam tensioners). And not from the cam plugs in the rear. I can't tell where exactly it's coming from the front. Looks to be pooling near the center. I suspect the crank shaft seal. I'm frustruated because I carefully removed the old crankshaft seal with the propper tool, inspected the area where the seal rides on the shaft for scoring or damage, and installed the new one with the propper tool. I'm thinking bad new seal???
I've been fighting the oil leaks for over 6 years.
PS: When you put in a new seal lubricate it with a compatible grease. Perhaps it just ran dry for awhile.
