trouble starting
I have a 2000 A6 Avant with the 2.8 30V engine.
I have not had a chance to pull any codes yet but over the last week it has not been starting well but after starting it seems to run just fine.
This morning it would not start at all. It turns over well but just sputters and dies. oil looks ok and I don't see anything obviously wrong. I do smell a strong oily gassy smell almost like it is flooding when I try and start the car.
have any of you had anything similar happen. I will be pulling codes asap but nothing yet

Just few other things I remembered, A few times it sounded as if it was backfiring like the timing was way off or something like that.
As an update - I just tried it again and it started up like it has no issues at all.

Finally got the chance to pull the codes, looks like the coolant sensor. did some reading and it sounds really common. I will pick one up and let you know how it goes.

It took a while to get started after replacing the sensor. it seemed to be flooded and took a bunch of cranking but after getting it started it ran great. No additional codes were logged. so far so good.
