Default Looking at a 2000 2.7T

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a 2.7T with 125k miles on it. It's a 6 speed with a recent timing belt change (at 110k miles), new wheel bearings, front struts/coils, clutch, and new pads/rotors.

The only downsides are that it needs a control arm in the front and the wheel caps were stolen. (I'm assuming they can be purchased relatively cheaply?)

What should I watch for, when I go and look at this car? Anything in particular I should check for?

Also, I'm a college student. I know that Audi's are generally more expensive to maintain, but realistically, how much should I expect to pay to keep it maintained?

Keep looking. Not a car for a college student...unless you're in Audi maintenance college.

How much are they asking?

Since you are in college I would avoid the 2.7 engine because, while the turbos are great fun l, I they blow or fail the repair cost is more than 5k

Look into the 2.8 it's the sister engine of the 2.7 just without turbos. It's still quick just not as quick. But the 2.8 is very reliable if maintained for properly.

I should also mention: it would be an even trade for my current car. I.e, I wouldn't be 'paying' anything. I have a car that gets much better gas mileage and has 45k less miles, but is far less luxurious. He got a job that involves a 1.5 hour commute, which is why he's looking for something more economical.

For my 2002 3.0L, bought it at 120k mi. 2 yrs ago, budget about $150/month for repair/maintenace.

Don't know about 2.7L turbo, consider the turbo may be more money in repair.

Okay. That actually sounds pretty reasonable. Did you do the maintenance yourself, or have it done by a dealership? I ask because I'm friends with an Audi mechanic and am ASE certified, myself.

I'm going to go take a look at the car in a couple hours. Could you guys recommend a few things I should check, while I'm there? Anything in particular to watch for?

If you really want this car then when you are driving it LISTEN to the turbo. If you hear any unusual whine (YouTube blown s4 turbo or dentist drill) or see any kind of smoke from the exhaust it's red flag.

Look at the coolant make sure it's pink. Ask them what oil they used and how much their interval was. If they used non synthetic or synthetic blend, stay away.

If he allows you to jack up the car and look under the bumper. Yo will see black rubber hoses on each side. Open one of those hoses that lead to the jntercooler with a flat head screwdriver (should be one in the trunk) and look for oil. A little bit is ok. Lots of oil like a cups worth mean you need to start running.

Good luck.

That's the thing, I'm sick of my current ride. I'm a Residential Assistant on campus, which means the car will be driven MAYBE 100 miles/month. So, as far as maintenance goes, it's not like I'm going to be blowing donuts in the parking lot and street racing my friends.

That being said, I've mostly heard that I should expect to pay $125-200 a month in maintenance. If that's what it'll (on average) cost me, I'm fine with that. I work two jobs on the side, so I should be able to afford it.

I'm mainly just looking for advice on Audi-problems. I'm completely new to Audi's, and I want to be relatively sure that I'm not buying a ticking time bomb. I really do appreciate all of your advice though!

I know I'm a bit insane for wanting an Biturbo Audi in college..
