Some Questions - A6 Issues
I went to see an A6 today. The owner thought there were 2 problems with the car: 1) alternator dead 2) AC not working
So I did some digging around on the car and in VAG COM.
Here's some things I noticed:
- Both electric mirrors not working
- Both heated seats not working
- Lights in the Climatronic for temperature are dim (w/ dimmer @ full illumination)
- Turning headlight switch on, none of the illumination seemed to come on? Maybe I wasn't looking but pretty sure
- "FUSE" is displayed in the trip odometer
- Voltmeter on the dash showing nothing
- Battery light on dash
- AC comp. not turning on
Now, the contrary to what he said, the alternator IS working as I tested it with a voltmeter.
Anyone ever heard of the FUSE problem in the trip odo? And could that be related to the lights, heated seats, and mirrors not working, voltmeter not working, and battery light illuminated? I didn't want to start checking the fuses in front of the guy...

Another thing: the clutch pedal seemed quite stiff, and a lot stiffer than my Passat 1.8T. Is this normal for these cars or should the pedal be semi-soft? I felt it to be quite "tight" and I don't think it's suppose to be like that. Possible fixes? Master cylinder? Or should I be budgeting for a clutch job?

Any ideas about the AC problem? The demand for AC went to "full" or whatever it says in VAG COM measuring blocks, but the comp. never turned on. Leak somewhere resulting in low pressure resulting in the computer telling the comp. not to start? Or comp. dead? Could this have anything to do with the FUSE on the dash?
Thanks guys,
Elliott
as far as the clutch goes, yes it is stiffer then the passat. this is a AWD man of a car and as such deserves a bear of a clutch! lol (i came from a jetta so i had the same concern too!) that being said, it shouldn't be TOO stiff, it will be noticably stiffer then the passat but not TOO stiff if that makes sense. if it is too stiff this can be a sign of impending clutch doom. also, if you can get the car running feel the clutch for pronounced feed back. when mine went out it got really stiff and i could feel like somthing tapping on the clutch pedal, this was the clutch not disengaging all the way and bumping up against the fly wheel. in my experience ive never had the clutch material wear out on these cars before, its always that damn dual mass fly wheel that takes a giant poop and kills everything. on a healthy clutch you should feel noting through the pedal unless it is pressed in all the way (and even then it will be a light vibration caused more by the engine)
hope that helps a little
Ouch...are the evaporators prone to breaking on these cars or are you just guessing?

So there must be a sensor somewhere that senses the system is low on refrigerant, which in turn tells it to not start the compressor? All I know from looking @ it is the comp. doesn't start...
You're saying this is a common problem on Audi's in general...but I have never heard of an evap leak before on these cars...I have a B5 myself and have over 220k miles on it with no problems.

Ask on the B5 forum. Plenty of issues there too. I replaced the evaporator in our C5, my B5 avant, and our old B4.
