Default 2000 2.7T A6 Front Rotor Replacmeent

I have 108K miles on my original front rotors and I can feel vibration in the pedal when braking. I think I need to replace them. They were pretty worn on the last time I replaced the pads, but I didn't replace them.

My question is, what do I need to do to replace the rotors?

Do I need to remove the calipers, or can I replace the rotors with just the pads out and the calipers in place?

Thanks,

P.S. The car has the 4 pads per side, 8 total in front.

Assuming you have the HP2 brakes (sounds like you do) you can't get the front disks off without removing the calipers. The rear ones, you can, but that won't help you if you're just doing the fronts...

Yes, you must remove the calipers, which is a bit of a PITA due to bolt locations.
(140# and on the back of the hub, blocked by some fluid lines that must be moved, but i digress)

But i suspect that your vibration is NOT warped rotors. I suspect its pad deposits.
You might try a light sanding in place, if they measure well (face-face 28mm or more)

Its does not sounds like you have the tools or experience to measure run-out.

New rotors will certainly fix it either way.

Thanks for the info. It is true that I do not have any dial indicators to check the runout....ability is a maybe, in a past life I did it when aligning large rotating equipment....

I did have quite a 'lip' on the rotors the last time I did the pads. That is what lead me to the warped hypothesis.

Thanks again for the help.

Ciao,

Stop-Tech has nice article on pad deposits and/or removal.

Still, all this vibration on simple pedal-lift deceleration doesn't seem to me to be brake related. I could see it if you were using the brakes, but simply lifting shouldn't do this.

Thanks for the link. To clarify, the vibration is only during braking.
