Default Temp Gauge goes up but car does not over heat

I have 01' TT quattro w/ 170K miles. It has a lot of miles, but I love my car...The temp gauge needle has been bothering me. My car does not over heat. Driving through traffic, mostly stop and go for 35-45mins or any long period of driving, I turn the ignition off for a brief minute then turn the ignition back on, my temp gauge is up pass the middle, but no signs of leak under the hood and coolant reservoir is still full. At normal temp, the needle is at the middle. That doesn't look normal. Usually the needle sticks to one line before the middle. I took photos of it. I hope its nothing major. I wanted to try to change the thermostat and temp sensor(if any)if that would work..I need help guys

Mine is the same. Even though it reads around 115 degrees C (mine is a Canadian model) I've confirmed that it's bang on 90 degrees C with an OBD II reader. 90 C is exactly where it should be. My understanding that such issues are relatively commonplace with our instrument panels.

I haven't had a time to change the temp sensor and thermostat, but I decided to take a photo of how the temp needle should normally look like...this is with the heater on at 83F'with around 5 bars at fan speed..

There was a recall on the TT clusters, long since expired. The temp and fuel gauge tend to misread.

You can use VAG.com to check the actual temp, there are several companies that can fix the cluster.

my 2001 225 does the same thing plus the fuel gauge is misleading causing me to run out of gas one time. as long as there is no steam coming out of the front then all is well.

Default I currently have the same issue

My 2001 TT 225 HP Quattro Roadster’s temp gauge recently started creeping up when driving in stop and go however. It goes back to “normal” (at least for me).

I googled this issue to see what could be the problem. A poster at another forum for Audi gave me an idea on what to check.

1. I gathered my OBDeleven Pro scanner, screwdriver, and meter

2.i plugged in the scanner and connected to the app and started the engine

3. I popped the hood and checked for leaks. No leaks. Then I removed the panel for the overflow reservoir.

4. , the coolant gauge read about mid scale (93-95C on the scanner. After a few minutes the gauge would start going to the one mark right of center ( scanner read about 99C.). Both fans would kick on at 99 C.

5. I would slowly remove the cap to let some heat out and watch the instrument cluster temp gauge and scanner readout. Gauge would go back to center and scanner dropped 5 C to to between 93-94 C. The fans would cut off and then close the cap. I did this several times with the same result.

6. I then cranked on the heater to see what happens. I noticed that the temperature readout from
the scanner dropped from 93 C to 79 C but the instrument cluster gauge was still in the middle scale.

My question is this. What is the gauge position on the instrument cluster in relation to coolant temperature reading. from scanner?
should I buy another cluster since the middle red readout has some pixels not turning in?

This is very normal on TTs and going past middle one bar is still considered a safe operating temp even though it is a little high. The fans on a TT don’t kick on till like 100-104 c normally anyway. If you just turn your AC on then it will kick both fans on at any temp if your concerned about over heating.

the car has a built in digital reader. It’s built into the climate control screen. Press the inside air button and the up arrow (or top vent arrow) at the same time. This will show a number one. Then use the air speed **** and turn it up until the screen reads 49. After that just press the inside air button again and it will show the temp in Celsius. TTs before 2003 have a 90 degree thermostat so as long as it stays near there it’s fine. Anything over I would say 110 I would say there is a bigger problem. I have a very good scanner and the digital reading is lined up directly with the scanner and seems to be accurate. This is not the most ideal way to check but atleast you can know if your overheating or not.
