Just acquired 96 cabriolet 54K miles

Hi guys a little assistance is needed please. I just got a check engine light on this just acquired 2 days ago. I had a 93 s4 that I used to jumper wires across the terminals to read the flashing engine light in the dash, but I checked on this cabriolet and it is not the same. Does anyone know how to check for error codes to see what the check engine light is all about? Thank you. I know I should have done some searching prior to putting this out here, but I am hoping for a quick answer.

I guess it's OBD2 - I don't know how to check that with a paperclip.

a cheap ebay vag-com cable will at least give you the error codes.

I just found it in the center console under an ashtray in front of the rear seats but it doesn't look exactly like obdII. Is there a special plug for this?
