short to ground near front of engine (B3 7A)?

short to ground near front of engine (B3 7A)?
Thought the alternator was bad, replaced it. Car was running for a few minutes then died due to low voltage, before emitting electrical-smelling white smoke from near the front of the engine. I guess its a short to ground, and am about to dig into it. Does anybody have any suggestions/input?

Sequence? Engine dies, then white smoke, then key off and smoke stops? Or key off and smoke continues growing? I'd start with checking fuses and fusible links. But clarifying the sequence and whether the key was turne to off and if that stopped the smoke.
