Need help with 1990 Audi 80 quattro

I bought this car two weeks ago. The previous owner told me that the only problem was the starter. I seem to be having some sort of wiring problem though. When I turn the key the lights in my dash come on and the brake and temperature light blink on and off. If you can give me any help it would be much appreciated. If you need more info to give advice just let me know.

Will the car start or turn over? Are you sure the warning lights are not just the normal lights that come on with the key turned to the on position without turning it over? Have you checked the fluid levels? Things to check would be the wiring to the starter mainly the small trigger wire as it can corrode. Then possibly the ign. switch as they are known to fail on these cars.

It won't crank at all. The brake light and temperature light flash on and off. I assume that the lights would come on solid until the car is started and then would go out. I'll check the wires going to the starter. Thanks for the reply.

The lights are normal and always go off when in the first position. Does the fuel pump go off when you turn the key to the first position? Check your grounds from your battery to frame and frame to transmission. Make sure they are clean and tight. Check the copper wire from the inside of the starter to the solenoid and make sure that its still in one piece. The same wire yodasfro is talking about. The one on my car corroded threw and my car would no longer start. I would do the ignition switch just as preventative maintenance. Its cheap and very simple to change. Also make sure your battery is in good working order. Swap it with one from another car and make sure it still wont start.
