89 Quattro - Temp light., lifters

89 Quattro - Temp light., lifters
89 audi 80 quattro, 268,000 miles 10v.
The first question I have is does anyone have any idea why my temp light flashes when I make a right turn or accelerate? I thought it to be overheating so installed an aftermarket gauge. It does get warm when it idles(230F). The tiny radiator is bypassed(leaked). Ive never heard it boil over but it does seem to get overly warm when cruising in town. Ive heard the water pumps get weak sometimes.
The other question is about my lifters. I know they all tick but mine will start ticking for a minute when warmed up, then stop, then start again, even on the highway. Would it be wise to replace the cam and lifters? Ive running 15-40 in it in the summer.
I am a mechanic, but this is my first foreign car. Ive had it a year now. Best car ive ever bought for 100 bucks!(its in pretty good shape too) Any advice greatly appreciated

That was the first thing I thought of too, level is good though. Maybe its just a short in that unit thats in there. I still think its overheating. Last summer when it was up in the 90s it had no prob. Im goin gto flush the radiator and if that doesnt help install a new water pump and do the timing belt too...while im there I might as well get a new cam and lifters..maybe a nice Schrick cam. Such a great winter car, never got stuck once.
