Likely vacuum leak
So, my RS6 recently developed a problem. When I get on the gas, I hear a sucking sound from around the glove box or just in front of the firewall around there, and my power drops off a cliff at around 3000RPM. It really sounds like it's coming from inside the passenger compartment, but the other day I had the passenger side window open and I think now it may well just be so loud from the engine compartment that it sounds like it's on this side of the firewall. In any event, I have to guess it's some kind of vacuum leak, and it is destroying my performance. It gets louder and louder the higher the RPMs go up, and again, once I hit around 3000RPM the car just putters and gasps and lurches.
So, any ideas as to where I should start my search for a vacuum leak with these symptoms? Anything else it might be?

Hi
I had not as severe problems as you describe, but power drops did occur (mostly when shifting regimes). As one of many problems I had two turbo issues - the turbo waste gate valve did not close well enough (resonated) and my there were leaks in the airtubes connecting the turbo's with the engine. Although i am far from a technician, your problem sounds to me like a turbo problem or at least an air-feed problem.
I discoverd my problem of leaking airtubes by standing in front of the car, opening the bonnet and jsut listening to the engine in stationnary mode. I heard a hissing sound on the right, not on the left - so there was something wrong ...
Hope this helps a bit - I still have a nice problem as well - have a look at my post from some weeks ago(wedfrenn) - any good ideas very welcome !
