Default TT or TTS?

I'm sure this has been debated before but I still can't find a general concensus.

I'm going to graduate Spring 2016 with my RN and purchase the TT as a present.

Is the TTS worth 8 grand? I realize you get like 30% more power and some upgrades but couldn't I put a supercharger on it for like 5 grand and have lots of power?

My main "want" is off the line acceleration and cornering ability, not so much outright speed.

Default The Mk 3 TTS looks like a real winner from a performance perspective

Once Audi upgraded the base Mk 2 TT engine in 2011, I felt the performance value in a TTS was marginal. The 2011+ engine was grosly underspeced by Audi, I think purposely to make the TTS more appealing. Dyno tests by APR show the new base TT engine providing over 220 HP and over 290 ft-lb of torque. The TTS still has beter acceleration numbers but the gap has narrowed to about a half second for 0-60.

The Mk 2 base TTS has a lot more standard features than the base TT, like mag ride. (Check the AudiWorld model guide for specifics) On the negative side, a lot of folks don't like it's noticeable turbo lag. (Exept for eliminating the lag, you would not gain much from a supercharger.)

The Mk 3 apears to be a different story. It will likely be released in the US about a year from now. The new TTS is expected to have about 310 HP, while the base TT numbers are expected to increase slightly. I plan to test drive a Mk 3 TTS roadster as soon as it is available. I normally keep my cars for about 6 years but with the increased TTS HP and hopefully another jump in improved handling, the Mk 3 TTS appears to be very attractive indeed.

I have to agree. For the mk2 it was basically 210 vs 270. For the mk3 its 220 vs 310. The wider gap makes the 8 grand more worth it but as far as resale value and usability I still wonder.

I had a SRT6 for a couple years and my biggest beef was that you could never ever use the power without going way over the speed limit. I switched to 99% stock '13 MX5 and feel it's a much better option. lightweight with reasonable power means good performance BUT it can do a corner! The srt6 would look at a corner and go "OOH a tree!" (I never hit a tree but you get my drift.) Plus the MX5 requires shifting, the SRT gets to 100 in first (exaggeration) so that's boring...

Long story short I wonder if it's better to save the 8 grand and get a TT that is more "usable."

Default The improvement in the TFSI engine used in the base TT since 2011 is remarkeable

Comparing APR tests for the base TT engine vs Audi's advertised performance for the Mk 2 TTS: about 225 HP vs 265, and 293 ft-lb vs 258. The improvements shaved a full second off of the 0-60 time of the prior base engine used from 2008 to 2010! This fact has been largely ignored by the media and by Mk 1 owners who were tunred of by the mediocre performance of the original base engine. According to the 2014 Audi tech specs, the TTS is only .4 seconds fatser from 0-60 than the base model.

However, we can't ignore that the TTS will corner better and has more standard features. In the resale market, a quick look at cars.com shows the TTS still comands a $5K to $8K premium over the base for same year cars with comparable mielage.
