Default ** 2005 Audi S4 cylinders 4 and 8 misfire **

Hello all. I am in quite a pickle here, and there's a story.

Long story short, I left my car with a friend who didn't drive it at all and let it sit for over 3 months. I buy a new battery for it, get it started, and there is this weird sound coming from the engine. I would rev it up to maybe 3000-3500 RPM and it would make this grinding sound. After letting it idol a little bit, the sound went away and I could rev the engine fine. I take the car around the block and *ding* the check engine light pops on and the car is vibrating like crazy at idol. Thinking a coil pack went bad, I take it in to my mechanic who checked the fault codes to confirm. Here are the codes...

5 Faults Found:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 001 - - MIL ON
16688 - Cylinder 4
P0304 - 001 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
16692 - Cylinder 8
P0308 - 001 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
17755 - Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P1347 - 001 - Incor. Correl. - MIL ON
17748 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P1340 - 001 - Incor. Correl. - MIL ON

We changed the coil packs for both cylinders, changed spark plugs, swapped fuel injectors with lower cylinders (misfires should have transferred to 3 and 7 if the injectors were an issue), checked cylinder compression (180psi). That leaves me with the worst case scenario... timing chain tensioners/ guide issue. One thing is puzzling me though, how is it that only 4 and 8 are misfiring. Shouldn't I be getting misfires from almost every cylinder randomly.

Some ideas or similar experiences would help a lot. It will be a couple months before I can lift the engine out, and I am ready for the worst...

I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate adventure... I'm having a similar issue. I'm new to this site. I couldn't tell if anybody had any suggestions for this issue?

My story, misfires are 5,6,7 and 8. Had the coils replaced twice, changed spark plugs, wires... I was told it could be one of the two ignition control modules (I saw on a different website, they are also called, Output stages and Ignition amplifiers)... regardless of what they are called... I'm trying to locate these friggin ICM's.

Does anybody have a picture or diagram of their location? I'm beginning to think they don't exist on my Audi S4. Maybe, they're part of the Coil system (I'm sure I said that wrong)??? I would really to get this convertible back on the road before the snow starts to fly...

Kind Regards,
BrownJohnson

MK – After reading thru your OP… The only thing you or your tech did not replace or diagnose were the CP sensors. Other than the symptoms your car is currently experiencing, unless you pull the motor, unfortunately there is no sure way to know if it is a chain guide . For the both of you – please read this thread as it is very informative in regards to your symptoms and will hopefully help you’ll along the way…….. It could also be the camshaft advance on that bank as they are known to wear and that outs the timing out on a whole bank
