Wanted: 17" winter wheels/tires

Wanted: 17" winter wheels/tires
First-ever post. I'm running stock 18" Avus wheels with Continental DWS tires that are virtually new on my B6 S4 avant. Traction is decent, but not quite as good as I expected in the ice/snow.
Q1: How much of an improvement would I notice with snow tires on the alternate wheel size (17", unsure of width) to support 17" 235/45 91H?
Q2: Does anyone have a lead on some (relatively) inexpensive wheels I can run in Minnesota winters?
