1997 A6 (C4) 2.8L Stuck in "Limp Mode" will not shift gears (Auto)
My '97 C4 has run into a problem. It is stuck in 1st gear (i think it's 1st gear) on an automatic gearbox. This problem is also accompanied by a worrying "Clank" noise when shifting from neutral to reverse or vice-versa. I have stopped driving it after this happened because i don't want to damage the car. After asking around someone said to check my ATF because it could be low. I read up on here the steps involved to top-up/change ATF.
Is it imperative to have the car level while topping up the ATF?
I understand you need to get the car to a certain temperature, but is it necessary to rev the engine as well to get the fluid circulated?
Anyone have experience with the clank noise while switching from R - N?
Anything else that can be causing this?
I'm at a loss. Newbie who really needs to get his car on the road any help is much appreciated.
