crankcase seal failure

Hello AudiWorld. This is my first post. I have a 2007 S4 with just under 65k miles. I have started to leak oil from very low on the engine. My mechanic put dye in the oil and wiped down the engine really good. When he looked at it again after about 60 miles, there was no oil above the crankcase. He thinks its most likely coming from the crankcase seal, just above the oil pan. (I am doing my best to re-iterate technical info, so feel free to correct me;). I did some research and found some guys saying this would be caused by crankcase breather hose failure. My mechanic also said that it could be the oil pan seal, and I have another appointment to do a little dis-assembly and narrow it down better. He doesn't think its the cam adjuster seals or the valve covers, as the leak is too low on the engine. So now I'm looking at having the engine pulled for these repairs. Does anyone have any advice on the cause of this problem, or how long I have before more damage can be caused by this? (I'm not leaking much oil).
A related question, I am planning on doing some service to the timing system at the time I pull the engine. Are there any upgraded timing parts available? Ie: tensioners or guides?
