Default 2005 TT 1.8 new buyer - already repairing something

Good afternoon --

Picked up 2005 TT automatic with 96k and all the service had been done, including water pump and timing belt replacement at 75k. This past weekend was the perfect convertible weather and loved it. But, 2 things have happened since I bought it:

1) Started smelling a faint odor of gas in the cabin, so took it in to a reputable shop that had great Yelp reviews. Diagnosed as the fuel tank rubber seal (behind the passenger seat) was shot, so replaced that (to the tune of $420 - $130 to diagnose and $290 for labor and parts).

Now, I am still smelling gas (not as bad as before), so my question is, does it take awhile for that smell to completely go away??

2) the shop says that my tachometer is defective - when stopped at an idle, it is at "0", it revs up once I get moving, but he says it should be around 6 or so at idle, and to replace the instrument panel is close to $1,000 ... ugh

I knew this was a car that I was going to eventually have to put money into, but thought by getting one with low mileage and all service had been done, that it wouldn't be this soon.

Starting to wonder if I made the right choice for this vehicle as a 2nd vehicle.

Use search function for your instrument cluster issue. Hundreds of threads on here about it.

Spill gasoline on a cloth and notice how long the stench lasts . If that was really your issue, you will smell it for a long time.

I have a 2008 TT cluster I can sell you if you want and if it is compatible with yours. $140.
IGNORE: 2008 is mk2, and you have an mk1. sorry.

Highly recommend BBA Reman. Just sent my TT cluster in for repair (had a bad center LCD and a wonky temperature gauge), they provided a next day air label to ship mine out, had it done the same day, and shipped it out next day saver back to me. Out on Thursday, back on Monday. YMMV, based on their workload. Did mine via an eBay auction.
