Default First Oil change newbie question

Ok - when changing out timing belt yesterday - I decided might as well do the oil change too - Put on K&N 2005 filter - and noticing that I seem to be getting lots of drips all day long from where I pulled the filter. Not sure what the trick is to get the filter out without lots of oil getting on everything below.

I wiped everything down a couple times - and don't know if my drips were from removal of the filter or in new K&N is having its own drip issue.

2003 Audi TT 1.8L Quattro Roadster.

Thanks for your input.

Practice. Best to play with a new, dry filter after you remove the old one next time to figure out how to manipulate it out. Rags everywhere....

Thanks - will do - still getting a bit of a drip out of filter area... Hate to drain 5 quarts of royal Purple out to try to figure out what is wrong with filter - but that is my next step unless there are better ideas....

The nice thing is that you should only lose what is in the filter plus a bit that the oil pump may have put at the top of the oil cooler (oil filter housing) when you remove the filter. Unless you have a defective filter, the old filter's gasket may have stuck to the filter housing causing the leak.
Personally, I only use Mann brand filters which are what VW/Audi uses.

Default you were right :)

I simply pulled off the 2 day old filter (KN 2005 - Do not advise you use that one due to the tight fit - the 1" nut to remove filter is almost completely useless based on filter location in the TT)... very little loss of oil.

Put on a BOSCH filter to replace K&N - and I guess we will see what the issue is... If its the filter great - if its the oil pan - then I will look for another thread to pull the pan and fix it.

Thanks again.
