6-speed manual stuck in 4th.
I recently bought a 2001 Audi TT Quattro with the 6-speed manual transmission. I got it for very cheap and the body/engine are in great shape, however the transmission is stuck in 4th gear.
I've read and searched around and have gotten a few different answers, so I thought I'd ask around here to get a good plan of action.
Anyways, the transmission is always stuck in 4th. No matter what gear you select, even in neutral position, if you let out the clutch, it's in 4th gear. I observed the shifting mechanism from under the hood and it seems to select all the gears as it should. Even moving the shifter to different gears feels like it's going into that gear, but it's still in 4th.
The man who sold it to me said it just randomly happened to him while driving, however I'm sure he abused it a little. I'm a mechanic so I have no problem pulling the transmission, and I assume one or more shift forks are broken. I was just wondering if there were any common things to look for before I pull the car apart.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.
I'm more of a BMW E36-E46 guru, and there is a seemingly infinite knowledge base for anything on those cars. I guess this car will be a learn-as-you-go adventure.
