flex pipe 2000TT 180HP

I decided to replace the entire cat converter and downpipe on the TT with a new one, and will keep my fingers crossed that the new Bosch O2 sensors work without triggering a CEL. Otherwise I'll have to play the spacer game and hope that works. This is the big question : is it a known problem on old TT's (195K) for the engine mounts to be worn enough to cause premature flex pipe failure? I hate to have to replace the pipe again in 6 months. Can an ex-Honda mechanic (myself) tell if the mounts are bad or is it something a specialist needs to look at? In theory because it is stick shift the mounts could be worn out from normal use. One exhaust guy told me "flex pipes break because they can only flex a certain number of times", but how many is too many? Anybody have any information or wisdom on downpipes? (I want to stay stock.) Thanks!
