Should I buy a TT for daily use or what? (how do they hold up 2017?)
I'm new here, but not to Audis really. I currently own a Audi 90 2.3 as my daily driver, which is kind of outdated lol.
However, I'm about to upgrade my daily to a more modern Audi and I've always been pretty sure about the A4 B7. Until now. When I started to check out the different engines a bit more the A4 really scares me. The two options I had in my mind was the 2.0 TFSI or the 3.2 FSi (200bhp or more and petrol is a requirement), both engines seems to have scary kind of problems that makes me think that they might not be suitable for daily use. As I don't really need the space that an A4 offers, I thought that the TT MK1 2002-2005 with the K04 1.8T engine might be an option. Those cars cost around the same as a B7, but I fear that the older platform might not please me as much as the B7 platform. Obviously the A4 has better comfort, but the comfort in MK1 TT shouldn't be that bad?
Please share your ideas, and feel free to suggest other Audis that might fit me. I did recon that the Mk1 S3 is the same car as TT Mk1? It seems like TTs in general is in better conditions..?
I have a 02 ttc Quattro and it's been my daily driver for a few years and I've done some long trips and have enjoyed them all . Only advice is get a good repair manual and do regular maintenance
My son drives a 225 TT (has the K04) daily in the Seattle area. It has about 120K miles. He enjoys it and hasn't had any major issues. As noted below, the key thing is routine maintenance (oil, coolant, haldex, etc, etc). Also, remember that the 3.2 in the A4 and the 3.2 in the TT are very different engines. The 3.2 in the TT is the VR6 not the 90 degree V6.
As far the B7, I haven't heard any issues with it's 3.2, but yes early 2.0's had oil consumption issues. I would post on the B7 area and see what year model the problem was addressed.
My 2 cents. We had an '07 VW Eos with the 2.0T. Used oil from the day we got it, about a quart every 1500 miles. Oddly, on longer trips, it didn't use any. Never got any worse and we never had any problems with it until the car got totaled at 83,000 miles. It was a strong engine, that car was fast.

The coupe is more practical with the hatch but I prefer roadsTTers. However, buying any 10+ year old car can be problematic. IMO you should buy the Mk 1 for it's better styling and manual tranny and the 2011+ version of the Mk 2 for its superior performance and reliability but all have DSG in the US except for a few 3.2 models.
I have had a 2002 MK1 as a daily driver almost 14 years (one owner. It was a late 2002, and not sold new off the lot until March 2003), and it's the best car I've ever had. Better than Toyota or BMW. (I won't mention the other more problematic brands I've had because they are so bad that they aren't even in the same universe with Audi.) With the MK1, you can enjoy a sporting fun daily commute as long as you wait for the oil to get up to temperature first and don't thrash the clutch. I just got a Mercedes E350 coupe with AMG trim, and when I get back into the TT a couple of times a week, it's amazing how current it still feels. Tight, responsive, and fun. Go for it as a daily driver. A simple 180 with FWD is the cheapest to maintain, and it's the easiest to get performance improvements with basic tuning. The GIAC tune for the 180 is amazing. And I would recommend the Dension GW Lite module. It tricks the factory Bose into thinking that the disc changer is a bluetooth. And there's an aux and USB input for it too. About $100 and an easy DIY to bring it up to modern spec while keeping the factory audio system.
And technically, a 2-door without a B pillar isn't a coupe. It's a hardtop. I've got 3 hardtops, and except for the TT, all 4 windows roll down all the way with no remaining divider between front and back.
