Thanks for feedback given for my problem. I have just bought an Audi TT my 1 on an 03 plate. On the surface of things, it looks like a good car. My wipers stopped working last week but the washers were OK. I changed the relay as suggested but no change. When I flick the wiper stem, I can't hear the relay operating...should I be able to hear it ??.
I have just ordered a new motor but don't want to go through all the hassle of changing it if there may be another underlying issue.....what has thrown me is that I can't hear the telay and not sure if I should be able too.

Standard automotive electrical system troubleshooting techniques apply. Connect a DC volt meter to the wires powering the motor at the motor. Do you get 12 volts when you turn the wiper on?
If yes: Motor bad or mechanical bind in arm linkage assembly.
If no: problem lies somewhere before the wires at the motor.
Buy a wiring diagram (Bentley service manual or All Data subscription) and trace wiring to find & repair. You also should be using Ross-Tech VCDS to see if there are faults associated with the wiper circuit. Note that cheap diagnostic scan tools will not go beyond drivetrain fault diagnostics and won't help here.
Note that there is a fuse/fusible link for the motor that could be open.Again, another reason for buying the service manual.
If none of this makes much sense, you're better off paying someone to troubleshoot for you. Maybe find someone willing to let you watch them so you can learn from them.

I don't think jumping into buying a new motor is the right move. Get the Ross Tech VCDS as suggested by Mister Bally and see what it tells you. Our older Passat cruise control quit and the Ross Tech software identified the problem as the switch on the stalk. Installed a new stalk and all was well. There is a good chance the car will tell you what is wrong and prevent the purchase of unnecessary parts.
