BIG difference between saying the RS3 lease rates suck and just a A3 lease sucks. The RS3 is in high demand so the money factory (interest rate) on the lease is high. And typically the residual value (as a %) is often lower on these types of cars. Compare a M3 residual to a 328i residual as a %, or a S4 to a A4 residual as a %, and you can see you never get your money back out of the "premium" you pay for the high performance variant (general speaking). So yeah, an RS3 is gonna cost a lot to lease with high interest/low(ish) residual. But an A3 lease is very competitive. In fact, Audi is very competitive in leasing now. Go back a year or two and maybe not, but they are really under pressure to move sales along for the company after diesel gate, and they are very competitive now. Motor Trend just did a $399/mo lease comparison article with the A4....you can see it leases just as well as basically any other car in the class. I leased a TT for 3 years, $53,000 car with 15K a year with almost nothing due at signing in the low $600/mo range, which is pretty competitive for any car with that sticker price. Don't let "old Audi leases" of the past be confused with the current deals. And yes, some models don't lease well. Don't even try and lease a M3....the numbers are ridiculously high. In fact, BWM is about to enter a "crisis" with all of the lease returns coming in that have residuals calculated laughably high, and the market can't support the volume of used cars right now. My local dealer has literally rows of 3 year old 328i cars...who is going to buy all of them? Google BMW leases crisis....you get unlimited articles on the subject. In fact, the BWM 3 series and MB C-class 3 years old currently have some of the lowest residual values in the entire industry! This is what happens when you inflate residual values for low lease payments....you better hope all of you extra sales pay for the money you loose when the cars are worth substantially less in the used market. Audi has refrained from doing this, and in the long run will probably better for it. However, a used 3 series right now is probably one of the best buys in the market...probably costs less than a Honda or Toyota at this point.
