Can you use Apple AirPods with CarPlay?
2018 A3 Cabriolet. I have read that Bluetooth is turned off when one connects an iPhone to CarPlay via a lightning cable. I am not certain if this means that you can't play music from another, Bluetooth-paired, device while the phone is plugged in, or if you can't output sound via Bluetooth from the iPhone while it is plugged in. I sometimes like to listen on my AirPods while my wife is sleeping and therefore would be bothered by music through the car's speakers, and I would like to continue to be able to do this while maintaining CarPlay access to Maps, etc.

When I had the original Apple AirPods, they worked well with CarPlay. Then I lost them. But I decided not to spend a lot of money on headphones anymore, so I bought a copy of AirPods, unfortunately, they don't work with CarPlay. But I'm still glad I bought them because they don't differ much from the original. The only problem is that I can't connect them to CarPlay. But I use them in the gym when I workout on the treadmill and I like their sound quality, battery power, and good price.
