Default Curosity re: Electromechanical Parking Brake

Basically I have two questions I would like to ask:

1) How well does this Electromechanical Parking Brake "hold" on a hill, especially when you are driving and stopped at a light?, and

2) The tutorial refers to the Electromechanical Parking Brake making a "self check" about every 1000km and not to be worried about it should you hear it. So my question is, "what the heck does this sound like? Is it loud? Subtle?" I definitely want to make my wife aware of it as I'm sure the first time it happens, she'll be the only one in it. LOL Thanks.

Hey russbert. I don't have specific answers to your questions but I would have to assume the electromechanical brake should hold on hills pretty well considering it's the only brake in the car which replaces the traditional hand e-brake. If not that would lead to problems I would think. Btw, doesn't the car have Hill Assist?

Your second question is a good one! I had never heard of the "self check".

The e-brake is a handy tool. May take a little getting used to.
If you stop at a light, on a hill, or anywhere, and engage the brake while in drive it will hold the car, until you press the accelerator again, at which point it automatically releases.

The behavior is different if you are in park when you engage it. Then you will have to manually disengage it before the car will move.
Don't try to engage it when the car is moving! scary things happen.

I have never noticed the automatic adjustment - so maybe you won't either.

I probably won't but my wife, who has very acute hearing, probably will. ;-) Thanks.

Yes it will hold the car just fine on a hill. It will apply enough pressure to hold the car. You don't really need to use it other than for parking, though. These cars have hill start assist which holds the brakes for a few seconds while you change over to the throttle and start moving.

I don't know what the self check sounds like. I think mine skips it, because I always apply it manually when parking. Somewhat a habit of driving manual transmissions for many years but also recommended by Audi.

Yes, I was quite surprised when I heard that on the video as well (every 620 miles). It's mentioned around the 2:02 mark of the brake video if you're interested:

Thanks re: hill start assist and the fact you must set it manually versus it being automatically set. Nice to know its there since I've driven manual transmissions (anti theft devices :-) for many years as well.

There are a couple of other worthwhile things to know about it. It's been mentioned above, you don't have to manually release it. It releases automatically as soon as there is enough torque to move the car forward or backward, and as long as you are wearing your seat belt. I mostly release it manually, though, because the automatic release is not particularly smooth, but the automatic release is convenient when parallel parking on a hill. The hill start assist doesn't always engage when slowly maneuvering on a hill. The second thing to know, it engages automatically if you are in gear and open the driver's door.

Thanks as I didn't know about the last two points (i.e., automatic release is not particularly smooth and doesn't always engage when slowly maneuvering on a hill).

I really like that feature as the Porsche Macan's have it ("hold feature") as well.
