Default New 2.5 TDI embarking on European Adventure

Myself and my other half have just bought a relatively low mileage (130,000) C5 A6 2.5 TDI, with the plan to take it all over Europe during the summer. We're planning to do about 5,000 miles over the course of 6 weeks, leaving in late July.

We've bought the car this early so that it can become my daily runner, and allow us to work out any quirks beforehand...

Are there any major things we should be checking, fixing, or maintaining in the next couple of months to make sure we aren't doing the car a disservice, apart from the usual filters and oil, of course.

Currently dealing with stuck front calipers (it was sat for a month before we bought it) and the Active Range Control on the headlights being in error.

Thanks in advance for your help! Sorry in advance if this is the wrong thread etc.

Mike

I would do a trans fluid and filter change and closely inspect the steering and suspension. Look for torn CV boots, worn tie rod ends, control arm bushings, worn, leaky shocks, etc. Get a VAG-COM code reader or have a shop with one do a complete check for any codes. This is a more complete diagnostic than a generic OBDII reader. It checks Audi codes that OBDII can not see.

Thanks for the info, I'm fairly handy, so an ATF change doesn't look too taxing judging by the guide. I'll make sure to schedule that in.

Rebuilt the front brakes last night, looks like the torx bolts that hold the calipers on weren't lubed when they were replaced, so had seized.
Gave me a chance to take a look at the CV joints and suspension, all looks okay-ish. Some of the bushes are a little torn.

Will this scanner do the job?:

Thanks again, Mike

Nope, will not do the job as well as the proprietary VAG-COM or VCDS will do. If you are going to depend on this car, doing it right the first time is the only way to go.

10-4, will get a copy of VCDS asap. Especially as I'll probably need it to figure out what's up with the xenon system.

Thanks, Mike
