Blown timing belt...questions
[1] Have searched other forums, but just thought I'd ask....any chance no valve damage?
[2] Assuming answer to Q1 is in the negative....the car has been maintained well, has 160K....so don't
want to put a lot of money into it, am considering the following options;
[Inexpensive] Buy a reman head, will involve transferring parts....etc.
[Cheap] But a used head, there are heads on ebay etc., in the $500.00 range, that were taken off a running vehicle, some with low mileage,
and have the cam chain, etc.....ready to bolt on.
[Cheap?] Take head to a shop, have only bent valves etc. replaced.
[Cheapest] Pull a head from a junkyard.
[3] Timing belt kits...Oreilly's has a non OEM kit for $300.00, elsewhere similar.....
but found a Contitech kit for $133 on ebay…..
some research shows Contitech is part of Continental, with a good rep.....
any thoughts appreciated...
Valve job(mechanic), Valve job(DIY), used head off running car,.....
Also, one shop said scrap the car, or get used engine....possibility of hairline cracks in pistons,
they tried to sell me a used engine $7K installed, but not a hard sell, just in response to my question on cost....
and did recommend just purchasing another vehicle.....pistons don't look bad at all, couldn't tell
they had hit the valves....is there anything to this hairline crack business??
