Default ? about remotes and batteries - read manual and did search (more)

Ok, first one remote stopped working so kept using other one. Now, other remote has died. Used Audiworld search to find out how to get to battery compartment on remote. Do I just replace the batteries (2 in each remote)or will I have to get them programmmed. Little bit confused. Right now,I just lock and unlock car by turning key in door the old-fashioned way. What would be the proper steps to take. Looks like battery is Panasonic CR 1620. Can one use other brandbatteries? Best place to buy? Any info is appreciated. Car is a 1999 A4. Bought car in 2002 and I am assuming they are the original batteries. Thanks

U can use any brand 1620 cells. I have replaced cells b4 and not had to reprogram my remote. Other times they needed reprogramming.

There are tones of messages on the subject of reprogramming the remotes....

Default Programming remote (courtesy of BSK).. Batteries.. any will do. umm circuit city ?

Programming remote unit

- Switch ignition ON.

- Lock vehicle mechanically at left front door using second key.

- Press "Open" button on first remote unit (key fob) once (to assign memory address to remote unit number one).

Note: The alarm horn will sound briefly each time the "Open" button is pressed to confirm the reception of the signal during this process.

- Wait six seconds after sending last signal, then press "Open" button again.

^ Doors will now unlock (remote unit is now programmed).

- Lock vehicle mechanically again using second key.

- Press "Open" button on second remote unit (key fob) twice at 1 second intervals (to assign memory address to remote unit number two).

- Wait six seconds after sending last signal, then press unlock button again.

^ Doors will now unlock (2nd transmitter is now programmed).

- Repeat procedure for additional remote units (key fobs) to assign memory addresses number 3 and 4 if necessary.

- Switch ignition OFF.

- Check each transmitter for proper function

Ok, trying this but having problems. Have first remote in ignition - on. Second remote in door, door is open, door will not lock. Or do you close the door? But then if you close the door and lock it, how will you push open button on first remote that is in the ignition? I feel like an idiot even posting this but I am trying to get this fixed. Replaced all four batteries in the two remotes, unfortunately the remotes did not automatically work. Any help appreciated.
