Default ABS rotor question

99 Avant 1.8T quattro (AWD). ABS light on. vag- comed. Got the code

1 Fault Found:
00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Left (G46)
35-00 - -

Ordered an ABS sensor (the same as the old one). Replaced the old one. Cleaned the code. Drive the car. The same code comes again in within one minute.

Seems not a problem of the sensor. Want to check the ABS rotor (ring). Looked into the Bentley manual. It seems only the bolt at the center of the wheel need to be taken off. It has an allen socket for my car.

But when looked at the car after taking off the wheel, many things a attached together. I am asking myself if I have to take everything appart. Anyone can tell me how to take it off? Furthoremore, what is the size of the allen
socket?

Thanks!

Default A couple things...

Sometimes a new part out of the box is faulty. Did you try swapping in one of the other sensors to that position?

I don't think I've ever seen a problem with an ABS ring (except where it was completely missing). Have you double checked the connector and did you clean out the sensor hole with a wire brush to make sure it was making a good ground?

Also, if you check the Bentley manual, I believe there is a procedure for checking the connector for an appropriate voltage/ground. You'll want to do that to make sure it's not just a wiring issue (chafed wire somewhere between the connector and ABS controller). If everything else checks out OK, it's a faulty ABS controller.

Cheers,

Default Quite strange is that

My car has different ABS sensors at the two rear
wheels. Left side is a 8d0-927-807-f, and right side is a 8d0-927-807-c. So, I cannot swap them due to the ground problem.

Default There ya go. It's happened to me a number of times....

You replace a part and suffer the same problem...so you scratch your head looking for other problems, waste lots of time...only to realize that the "new" part was defective right out of the package.

Default I have in fact sent the car to a decent shop.

The shop said they tested the sensor, and it is a bad one.

Default The allen socket is 17mm. Just took mine off today to replace the half-shaft.

It's not the prettiest job. My ABS/ASR lights lit up after I replaced the shaft and found out it was a dirty sensor. Really though, to see the actual 'strip' on the shaft, you'd have to take out the axle bolt, then turn the wheel to get the half-shaft loosened enough to take a gander. Even then, you might not see the ring well enough and end up having to take out the two upper control arms from the suspension member.

I'd try to loosen the axle bolt and turn the wheel out and try to take a peek that way. But I'd also exhaust all other options before doing that.
