Daily driver setup for longevity and fun
It is stock right now, suspension is a bit creaky but control arms and all other service were done on time all through its life. I am sure the engine won't last forever, but since it has been babied I expect to get atleast 200k out of it. I'd like to drive it as long as possible, and am thinking I'll stay a bit conservative on the mods.
One thing I hate is having the engine running at 3800+ on the highway. I was talking to some people over on AZ and they suggested going with a 2.8 tranny since it's a bolt on and will bring me down 400-600 rpm at speed. I am worried about the power required to turn the 2.8 tranny since the most I want to do to the engine is add a chip. Will it make enough power just chipped to enhance the ride or will I be ******* it up to 70-75?
I am planning a snub, 16" wheels, an APR 91 octane program and the 2.8 tranny swap. Will any of these mods signifcantly shorten it's lifespan? What other mods are gentle?
I want to keep taking care of the car, but I need some power. The asthetics of this car are so pleasing that I'll love it forever, but I don't want to be a grandpa driver. What are usually the 1st things to completely fail? (I have read common problems on the B5 FAQ)
with an APR chip, you'll have more HP and torque than a 2.8, so i don't see the 2.8 tranny being too much for it, though it will slow you down just a dad versus the 1.8t transmission.
other minor tweaks involve a DV and/or N75 valve replacement to help keep boost levels smooth.
