Question about tranny issues...

Question about tranny issues...
About a week ago my CEL came on and I was unable to put my car into reverse. I can put it into all five gears fine, but can't get it into reverse. I took it into the dealership (Tischer Audi in Silver Spring MD) and they told me it would be $1800 to drop the tranny and determine what the problem is. They also told me that it would be about 3-4k to replace the tranny if the problem was serious.
Just curious what my options are at this point. The car drives well otherwise, but parking at school is a huge hassel so I wanted to get it fixed asap.

go to induktion if you live in MD. there is also a g2g this weekend in the dc area
check the mid atlantic board for info. most people in the dc area have a vagcom with them on every meet to diagnose things

Re: do you have a short shifter? you might just need to adjust the linkage.
I don't have a short shifter, so I'm not exactly sure how to check linkage...
Normally I don't take my car to the dealer, but its a lot more convenient when I'm at school.
