Default Should I buy this A4

Hey guys
I am thinking of buying a 1998 A4 2.8 with 167,000 miles on it. My friend wants $5,000 for it. I have checked with Kelley Blue Book and they say it is worth $7,480 Private sale. It seems to be a very clean car. It does have a slight shimmy at 60mph and a slight rattle when I hit a bump coming from the front end. I was think Ball joint or something along that line. Also it seems the windshield leaks when parked in a hard rain. What I would like to know is, is this a good price? Will it be reliable? What if any are the common problems with this car? Are there things I should be checking for?

I must say I do not know much about Audi's. That is why I have come here. I have been a Saab man for sometime. I have 5 right now but am going to be selling some of them off. I have gone so far as to start a small Saab site (it is not much but it is a work in progress). I also work on cars from the Ford Model T right up through today stuff. I also work on a set of Lockheed Super Constellation Starliner airliners and light Aircraft so I am not scared of getting dirty.

Any help with this would be great. I got the car for a week or so to see if I like it and so far I do. Thanks again guys, great site...

http://www.saabnet.net</a

Default dont really have any input on the a4...

outside of the fact that the 2.8 is known to be a strong engine so theoretically if everything looks good that car has plenty of life left.

i like your saab site, my mom is a big saab person, shes probably had 6 or 7. she just picked up a 9-5 aero last week. one of the nicest saab's ive ever seen, carbon fiber trim, 2 tone leather seats, its awesome. ive been looking for saab enthusiast sites for a while but never really came across anything great. www.european-forums.com is an awesome site for all euro enthusiasts (not sure if you have checked that one out) and there are some big saab fans there as well.

best of luck with finding an a4.

Default Control arms and tie rod ends (TRE's) for the clunk, possibly a shock? Check the drain under batt.

for the leak trouble, it gets clogged easy. Good luck!

Default wheel bearings + tie rods

for some reason, seems to be a pretty common problem on the b5 a4.

not a cheap fix either, at a shop should run you easily up to five bills.

Default powersteering rack ... check just incase... easiest way is to watch for fluid level decrease...

after a "spirited" drive. Lot's of twisties.. say 45mins... shouldn't lose any.. if you do, you either have a leak or the rack is bad

Default Re: dont really have any input on the a4...

Thanks for the kind words about my site. There is a Good Saab info site much like this but there is a down side. It is VERY EZ to get banned. If you say ANYTHING bad about Saab and I mean Anything. I was once Banned because I said "the 9-2X is over priced". That was it. If you stick to the BB's you will be allset. Lots of good tech help. Oh and I like the Sound of your Moms 9-5 Aero...

http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/</a

Default What would I need for tools to do a wheel bearing???

I am a Machinest and make custom parts for my Saabs and a Friends 1967 Porsche 911 when I should be working lol. I have the use of (and own myself) Mills, Lathes and Presses. With that stuff can I do the wheel bearing myself? Are they just in need of being pressed in and out? If so I can handle that no problem.
