Audi Q7 2015 (old model) Steering Column
I have just purchased a 2015 (old shape) Audi Q7 S Line Sport with all the bells and whistles!
I can see I have the electronic steering column adjustment and I can move the steering wheel in and out (reach) but not up and down..
Does this mean that motor is broken?
Cheers
You need to get a scantool on the car to see what's what under the skin of car anyway, so that's the first real troubleshoot step to get you on right path. If you plan to DIY your car, get tool that helps you DIY and can actually fix things, like Ross-Tech VCDS. If you aren't going to DIY your own car services or work on it yourself, then a cheap, convenient, VAG-compatible diagnostic scantool will allow you to view trouble codes and clear them; like the OBD-Eleven wireless module that works with smartphone app, etc...about $50-$60 for the basic module (don't buy the upgrades).
Yes, VCDS should be able to do that.

The OBD 11 offers very few 'one-touch' programming options for the Q7. Most changes or mods requires you manually go in and navigate, so you have to know exactly what you are doing to achieve desired results and not screw up something else. You really can't experiment w/o paying for the upgrade to PRO level subscription, which is a bit pricey for the amount of uncertainty involved. I can tell you they oversell the upgrade to the 'PRO' programming access...it really isn't great for the Q7, and not worth the extra $$ to subscribe to the higher level 'coding' access you need to change anything on the car.
Before you pay them anything, go read the forums on the OBD-11. Do remember that it's an annual subscription, whereas the Ross-Tech VCDS setup is buying the cable only; the software required to use it is free, and there's a ton of info on coding/maintaining/fixing issues encountered on the Q7.

Pretty easy to translate:
1) Open app and connect to car
2) Press the burger icon to get to the control unit list
3) Select control unit 09
4) Select basic settings
5) Open channel/group 001
6) Press green tick to activate the basic settings
7) You should see that it's working (changes states)
8) Once everything is done exit the basic settings
9) Done

but not sure if I dare do it!

. That's the primary reason I don't recommend it for advanced coding functions...you pay an annual fee for very limited coding access. It's great for the basics though, but they generically oversell what the device can do, as it won't actually do a heck of a lot on the Q7 chassis...they just haven't developed out their coding/access to car like they have on multiple other VW models, then they will tell you you can only do that if you buy the second-tier, NEXT LEVEL subscription, which is much, much more expensive...ask me how I know
. I was quite angry about that bit...lots of upselling going on...very little results. If you are going to spend/invest the money to be able to DIY, buy it once (VCDS), and be able to do everything you need to do on your Q7.
