Default I almost died!!

Folks...i have a 2019 audi q7. prestige. 20in tires. A/S. reasonable threads(NTB guy said no need to change in December). Had some snow this weekend. roads were not well plowed. Was doing 35-40 on the interstate, wasn't trying to change lanes, but spun out and lost control, narrowly missed getting run over by a 18wheeler. it spun out/lost control again on a 2 lane road while doing 15mph.
I've already ordered AO snow tires. but i'm curious why this would happen...

i think my 'lane assist' feature was ON, and may have tried to 'assist' my driving?? did anyone here have an issue like this?? do you think the lane assist feature can invite unnecessary corrections??
I've driven at least 8 cars thus far, and never had this issues, and none of my cars/suvs had snow tires in the past.

what else other than snow tires will help?? alignment? enabling 'off road' mode??

any thoughts apart from the obvious "stay home", will be much appreciated!

This is the MK1 forum, you need the MK2 Q7 forum.. nobody here has lane change assistance.

However, in my experience All Seasons are only all season for the first season, if they are not brand new tires within this last year they are just 3 seasons.. they all burn the snow ratings PDQ even if they have "reasonable" tread left they are no longer snow rated unless basically brand spanking new.. the choices for good tires in 20in size are pretty ****, while you may not have had issues in past vehicles were they also on low profile rubber bands with so few choices of shoes to install?

The fact you spun out twice, at varying speeds.. strongly indicates to me your tires were ****, dont buy that brand again.. consider getting a smaller set of wheels for winter use, like 18s have 10x the selection of tires to run and they are significantly cheaper.

Another vote for replacing the tires.

I call them No Seasons because there are No Seasons for which they perform optimally. I'm running Nokian Hakkapeliittas on 18" OEM rims (which are cheap on Craigslist). These tires are mah-vellous, I can plow through 6 inches of snow no worries. The braking is great! As a bonus you don't have to wait/book ahead in the early winter when everyone realizes that it's going to snow THIS WEEK! You just flip them yourself in less time than it takes to do the round trip to the tire store.

Sounds like you got the same winter storm we had in Ohio, and there was probably a layer of ice under the snow. In that case 30 to 40 was too fast regardless of tire condition. Did some interstate driving as well and I75 through Cincinnati had only one or two plow truck passes. Definitely needed a few more passes in order to drive safely over 35mph with other cars around.

In my mind, if the tire shop was crooked then they would have told you to replace the tires in hopes of selling a new set. So there is a good chance that the tires are still good.

Easy enough to measure the tires and check yourself

I still have my No Seasons on the 19" rims. They have another season left. I'll switch to proper 3 season tires when I find another set of OEM 18s.

I've got a set of factory 18's sitting in my parents barn, I think they were off a 2009 that I ran on my 2007. They have dead tires on them and need a new home. I'm in Ohio, whereabouts are you?

Oh, do you?! I'll be in that region in the fall, and I'm in need of another set of 18" wheels. If you aren't actively trying to get rid of them, let me know. I'll ping you via PM when the time gets closer.
