Default What would cause this "outward dent"....?

Hello Audi Gang! During my ongoing and extensive search, I've seen several Q7's where the driver's door has a large "outward" dent? Does anyone know what may have caused this? I wonder if a good paintless dent repair technician could remove it?

Default Dang, My Door Got's an Outtie Too!

Interesting; our '15 has the exact same looking 'outtie' at that location. I had chalked it up to a quickie, poor quality, dentless repair, or maybe an inner-door repair gone badly, but this seems to be a bit of a trend now, lol. It's got the Bose system in it, so couldn't be the massive audio output that did it. That's one of two 'rough' areas on our car, and we just decided to keep it that way to remind ourselves it's only a (really nice!) used car, not a priceless relic, driving it wherever we want to go, and doing things we can't do in ordinary, lesser vehicles...offroad jaunt anyone....anyone?

Perhaps it's caused by something to do with the power window mechanism? I've seen an instance (not on a Q7) where one of the bolts securing the bottom of the window channel came loose and allowed the whole frame to move in / out, and when raising the glass, if there was any resistance it would push outward on the door skin. But I've also seen similar issues when there is interference between the rear edge of the front fender and leading edge of the door, likely caused by a mild collision with something.

What amazes me is....both of the vehicles pictured above are for sale currently. Can't imagine why the dealers don't try and repair them....?

Nope, it's caused by the door being opened too widely and impacting the structure. I had something very similar happen to me once with my G37 coupe. I had opened the door in a wind storm and had it yanked from my hand - these are large doors acting like wind sails. Now I'm super careful when opening car doors especially in windy conditions.

Wow - I read the thread linked to by 10Q7TDI-Prestige....sure seems like a design issue to me. Many say it's the door hinge that's the issue, but I think it's more of an issue with the strength of the surrounding door structure around the hinge - not the hinge itself. The hinge is quite a bit stronger than the surrounding sheet metal, and during the "wind blow" the force is transferred downstream to the next component(s) which unfortunately are not robust enough with absorb the force....so they deflect / deform.

I actually feel much better about our 'outtie' now after reading that thread. It's a battle scar from car's 'life' rather than the result of someone digging around in the door panel...I'm good with that. The deep Daytona Grey pearl finish on ours really minimizes it and basically makes it disappear from most viewing angles, but we weren't buying it to be perfection at 6yrs and 93k miles on the clock; we wanted very specific features at a great price, and a good amount of TDI extended warranty remaining. That's exactly what we got, and it's still a very swanky looking car...cleans up really nice.

Funny. I am searching for the first gen Q7 and saw that exact thing in pictures online. Time well spent coming to this site and reading this.
