I looked at a 2013 Q7 TDI today - inspection results

From the sales listing this sounds like a potentially great Q7. My initial impression was that the price is a little high but it was worth a phone call. So I talked the sales manager and asked if they would please describe any major dents, dings, or scrapes. They said there were some minor scratches and it was otherwise pristine. I asked if there was any wiggle room on price and he said no. He said they'd had a lot of calls about this Q7 and he expected it to sell very soon. I told him I felt the price is just a bit too high for me...and thanked him for his time. Well today I figured I'd drive up and look at it anyway, if it was as nice as the pictures show, I would consider paying a bit more. This Q7 is indeed nice except for one issue, there is a major scrape at the bottom of the right-front door. I looked closer and this Q7 was bottomed-out hard in this area and the bottom of the door sill area is actually bent / pushed inwards. I do believe this issue is fixable without major surgery, but the dealer could have disclosed this....instead he acted like it was the first time he'd seen it. I did a vag-com scan and there were no issues. Lots of diesel-gate warranty left.
Feedback welcomed....
Sorry my answer is so generic...
what’s the story with the oil leaks? Seems a bizarre issue.
I’ve run the VIN … 16,000 left on the emissions warranty. Fingers crossed it’s as good in person.
I like it otherwise, but I'd certainly pass on it at that price given significant damage to the sill and exterior door...that's like getting suckered twice

), and so you pay more for them. The upside is they are about 30% more fuel efficient, still a hoot to drive, and they pull like a freight train (make the most torque of any Q7 engine offered), and can literally drive all day long on one tank of fuel on the highway (650-700 miles per tank). If all you drive is stop/go very short trips, the TDI IS NOT for you...they must be driven longer distances at higher rpms on a regular basis in order to maintain the emissions systems onboard. As to oil leaks, all Q7s (and Audi's in general) develop them past 100k miles around primary engine seals/rear main seal. The TDI extended warranty covers leaking engine seals; the gas engine has no warranty unless you pay for one yourself. Both fuel types can easily make it to 200k miles if you maintain them properly. If you are not a DIY kind of person, or independently wealthy, then the used Audi's may not be for you...as they can easily get 'expensive' if you have to pay a shop for every little thing...that's why Q7 owners join forums like this one...to learn what they don't know.
I've contacted a lot of dealers selling these TDI's and NONE OF THEM are willing to negotiate their asking price....not one!
Last Friday I called on this Q7:
https://www.crestcars.com/used/Audi/...ource=cars.com
Their original asking price was $24,995 which was a bit high but with low miles it was worth a call. I talked with the salesman and asked him to please walk-around and describe any dents & dings, he said that they only deal in premium hand picked vehicles and the condition is excellent. I said it does not have the tow package that I'm looking for, so I would expect a deduction for that - but he said the price is firm and they are getting tons of calls on it. I said please ask the sales manager if there is any room to negotiate - he says he will get back with me. We speak again and he says no price change, so I say it once again.....please confirm there are no dents or dings in the bodywork. He spews the same stuff - no issues at all. He asks when can I come look at it, and I say I will drive over on the weekend - provided there are NO DENTS OR DINGS. As we were talking on the phone, I had their sales listing up on my computer screen. Suddenly the price went from $24,995 to $20,998....right in front of my eyes! I sent the salesman a snapshot from my phone - and he said it must be a mistake and he would check it out. Well apparently someone at the dealership was moving the Q7 around and they scraped / dented the right rear quarter - hence the price drop. The salesman sent me pics of the damage - and of course I said I'm no longer interested. He said their price drop more than equals the cost to repair - and that it would be a mistake for me to walk away. I said thanks but no thanks.
After searching the net and tracking a boat load of TDI's for sale for months, driving hundreds of miles to look at potential candidates....I have yet to see a nice clean TDI at a fair price. Everything is beaten up. I'm going to continue looking, but after today I half-heartedly starting thinking I may not find what I'm looking for. Maybe I'm just too fussy. I'm sick of talking to dealers who always say "perfect condition" when the reality is quite different.

Case in point; The '15 we bought, I'd already made inquiries to dealer and got a video walk-around to show me specific areas of interest and confirm the options on the car, which weren't actually listed. From that, I knew it was exactly what we were looking for, and then it was just a wait to see if it would drop in price. I didn't chase it, I let it come to me via automated price-drop updates. At that point it dropped, it was either jump on it quick or lose the car. We jumped and slapped a deposit on it to hold the car for final inspection, and booked a one-way flight
. You may not find what you want locally, but it's out there.
