Default AE: How to pick something slipped behind the ashtray?

Today my parking access card slipped (don't know how) behind the front ashtray. Apparently, there is a small slot between the AC unit and the ashtray where thin things can slip in.

Car: Q7. 2008. 4.2 litres. Petrol.
any advice?
Keeping the card there and getting a new access card will cost $85. Does it worth it to remove the AC control unit and retrieve the access card?

Thanks

Are you absolutely sure it didn't just drop down in the gap between console / driver's seat? Small items disappear there. I don't have an ashtray in front console, rather it is a shallow, rubber-lined storage cubby right up at the front running the entire width beneath the A/C control unit...obviously yours is a removable accessory piece. As such, you should be able to pull the 'ashtray' insert out, or at least use a strong light to verify your theory.

Not knowing how the 'ashtray' accessory is configured in your front console area, you do need to be aware there is a slight air gap in the supporting framework right at the top, just below the A/C head unit's entry point, where something thin like an access card could possibly get pushed through it. It's unlikely that could just 'happen' though; it would need some help. Definitely check the base of seat next to console though, as there's a little spot where small items collect down there.

Although I was suspicious at the beginning, but I have checked all areas and gaps between chairs and under them. Checked every single place in the car. What made me believe that it was pushed to that air gap that that I saw the card just 2 minutes before I reach the access gate. Looks like my hand pushed it when I grabbed the face mask which was next to it.
I guess paying for another access card was the safest solution.
Won't leave any thin things in that area again.

Looks like you need to remove the trim around the shifter first.

Then get to the screws underneath that hold the ash tray in.

Thanks for the explanatory video. Actually I decided to avoid the risk and just keep it there 🙂
