Default Developing an acceleration sputter

When I bought the 07 Q7 3.6L it showed a fault with the high pressure fuel rail, misfiring all 6 cylinders. After I changed the plugs and coil packs this fault code went away. A week later I now have an Intermittent sputter when accelerating. It just comes and goes and only lasts a few seconds. Wondering if the high pressure fuel pumps need replaced. I have 112k on the odometer right now. I did check the coil packs and plugs, they are tight.

Yeah, that'd be a smart move to go ahead and swap those out before they frag your car...the sputtering is hopefully just a symptom of at least one of them starting to go. Don't wait & do both of them. It's a really big deal to resolve once an HPFP has fragged into your fuel system.

I'm going to take it to the mechanic asap. On the way home from work today, it sputtered pretty bad when i was trying to accelerate on the freeway. The check engine light came on then turned of when the problem stopped. Praying this isn't a really expensive fix.

Are these (Hitachi) the fuel pumps I would need to replace?

I use Rock Auto site for finding parts, as they carry a lot of OEM parts, which is the exact same as OE (Audi) parts, without the additional markup. Look for the ones that say "OEM or OE" in the results on Rock Auto and you won't be disappointed. Some results may say OEM replacement, but I would hesitate looking at any aftermarket items on the HPFPs specifically, as that is a majorly important part that you don't want to fail, and it needs to meet highly specific performance/high pressure requirements on these cars to function correctly.

I've seen/glanced at some threads on here discussing HPFP replacement if you want to scan around a bit in here, or you just get the exact part # and google it, then find out who the OEM is. FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, and BAV are some of the other sites I've used to source OE/OEM parts, for our cars.

Thanks, I will go OEM for the HPFP's. You're right about not messing around with parts that vital. No fuel, no go...

Just got done at the repair shop. One of the new NGK plugs I put in is bad. So the car is misfiring. They are ordering OEM Audi plugs to put in tomorrow. Also, they are updating the ECM from 2007 software to the current version. Lesson learned, don't skimp on aftermarket plugs.

Agreed on the plug/coils, and glad it was only the plug(s) as the root-cause issue. My last sedan had a wonderful 3.8L, all aluminum, naturally aspirated V-6, w/same coil on plug setup and used iridium electrode plugs from the factory...not cheap, but highly effective and practical too, as you had to remove the intake/variable intake controls, etc., seemed like half the friggin car... just to be able to gain access to all the plugs/coils on it to do the service. Oh thank goodness for 100k miles tune-up intervals on that car, yup! Definitely go with the OE plugs, but that doesn't mean you can't source them from wherever to save on costs; just use the same exact plugs.

As for the HPFPs, that's a project for another day, but definitely one you will want to stay ahead of, if it hasn't been documented as being done prior. You can look at your Rock-Auto parts listing on that Delphi pump and infer the 'why' in why you don't want them to fail from what it suggests to do.

Audi plugs weren't too expensive thankfully. In hindsight, I should have bought them in the first place. But I'm glad my Q7 is now running like a champ. On to changing the tranny and differential fluids and filters...

Interesting, I had exactly the same thing happen with OEM plugs a few months ago. Being brilliant enough to know a new plug couldn't be bad, I swapped coils and fiddled around until I finally gave in and moved the misfiring plug to another cylinder, and the misfire followed the plug. Bought a new plug and all was well. I inspected the bad plug as closely as I could and measured for any leakage and came up empty handed.
