Default 07' 3.6L 0AT Pan off transmission fluid/filter change

Does anyone know how many liters of transmission fluid will come out with a pan off change? I bought 9 liters of fluid to refill, since the liqui moly site states the transmission holds 8.6l.

Pan off nets you between 6-8 liters. Entire system capacity is roughly 12L, IIRC.

Of course that may vary somewhat based on your tranny; I've got the ZF 6spd in our '10 TDI. Needless to say, you don't get all the old fluid out by dropping the pan, but you get a bunch of it.

Thats more than i expected. I found an Audi fluid capacity chart that says 9L capacity. So, do you have to flush the transmission to get it all out?

Again, verify for your specific tranny, as the early cars used either an Aisin 6spd, or the ZF 6spd, so your results may vary from my own; I have not researched your car. There's a difference between the 'fluid service' refill capacity vs the transmission capacity. And no, you don't want to 'flush' your tranny or apply any type of pressurized system to them...just exchange the fluid or drop pan/swap filter/pan gasket, and refill with same amount you took out. There is of course an Audi procedure for how to fill the tranny fluid, but unless you had leaks at the pan or otherwise, just replace what you take out of it and be sure to follow process for torqueing the pan bolts to avoid damaging pan or seal, etc.

It may seem confusing, but the kit is designed around what you can expect to get out of the car when dropping the pan on tranny. The rest of the fluid is inside the transmission housing and cooling lines/cooler at front of the car. Especially on an older car, you never want to try to 'get every last drop' of the old tranny fluid out. By far the safest and easiest route is the simple drain/fill, but it exchanges less fluid compared to the pan drop, which allows you to swap the filter out and replace gasket, etc. Either method is fine, but the pan drop method is much more likely to create a big mess, even if you have it up on a rack and the proper catch pan, etc., as it is just awkward to manage w/o spilling old fluid, etc., and you are trying to catch all the fluid so you know how much to put back in the tranny.

Full Disclosure: We paid a shop to drop the pan, and I supplied the parts & fluid for the job. All the rest of the driveline fluids under car is relatively straight forward and easy to do at home.

I am having a shop do all the drivetrain fluids and filter change. I don't have anywhere to do the work atm. Just wanted to make sure 9L is enough for the mechanic. I guess they can get more if they need it.

That's a solid plan. Next time around you can just do the drain/fills on a regular interval.

Followed that Motul site link and went directly to their fluid finder. It suggested to do drain/fill service on the diffs every 20k miles, which seems more like an extreme duty-cycle interval to me. My target going forward is a 30k miles interval for drain & fill service on the entire driveline...it all gets done at the same time, regularly, yup. I'm not planning to buy any more vehicles unless someone crashes into ours and totals one out. Well, ok, maybe just a lightly broken-in BMW touring motorcycle again someday, but that's it, really.

That Motul (also a good brand of lubricants) said my ZF 6spd tranny (factory fill) holds 12.8 liters of ATF goodness, which is 13.53 U.S. quarts...nice! Now we know how Audi can get away with saying "it's a sealed system and requires no periodic maintenance." There's just a sh*t ton of fluid in there and running through a cooler (on my TDI) to keep things from burning up.
