Interesting A/C issue
2006 Audi A6, one owner. 120k on it. Primarily a winter car for us, but the folks have been using it this summer. A/C is cold and comfortable. After about an hour on the road, the center vents stay ice cold, but both outer vents and the rear center console vent get hot. Not unconditioned air, heat. It was 90, we were on a trip, so we shut those 3 off and remained comfortable. Cue 30 minutes later, the right side center vent began to throw heat, yet the drivers side remained A/C. Shutting the car off and restarting it reset it, back to working fine. Another hour or so, back to the same thing. No codes. The only code in the car is XM not activated. Just checked the charge on the system. Holds 550, recovered 480. Probably not that.

The heater valve in the plenum is probably the reason for the heat coming out of the outer vents. This valve gets gummed up that prevents the two electric solenoids from moving to the desired setting. If you search the forum, you will find postings on how to disassemble and clean the unit or just replace it with the updated unit (P/N 4F1-959-617-B) manufactured by Jurgen Liebisch (OE supplier) that I used on my 2006 A6 Avant.

Good thought, thank you. We’re pretty well maintained, frequent coolant changes, etc. The trouble is that it doesn’t happen until well into the drive. The next trip to the river, I will clamp off the heater hose and see what happens. Though, on a 90° day, one would not think it would call for heat.
