HU: Big Red "BRAKE" warning come and goes
The car is a 4F S6, 2007.
A couple of days ago, the big red warning message came onto to the dash, and also the red brake light icon started to blinking. It was very scary for the first moment, I tried braking immediately of course, and the brakes worked perfectly. I stopped anyway. We were very close to home, I started to drive slowly. After 20-30 sec, it was gone, and the dashboard was calm again.
Today the same happened, it came and went, and that's it.
Some circumstances which could be important. This happens in Sweden and all these occasions occured when the car was left in the very cold (-10C) for relatively longer time. When I start from the shared garage, where it is about 15-17C, never happens. The brakes are in a good condition, they (discs and pads) were replaced about 18k kilometers ago to factory new ones. (cost a fortune) The brake fluid was also replaced then. But this happened in Hungary at summer, so the fluid was filled in a very different temperature environment how it is now.
Also, what I notice, when I apply the hand brake, it has a slightly different sound as it used to have. It does not have that very high pitched final noise at the end. It holds the car well, I tried it, but that's different for sure. (even my son told me without knowing anything it may sound differently)
So, the question is, that could it be the brake fluid? This would be my first guess. Or have anyone experienced this earlier?
Again, the brakes are working perfectly, they don't harden up, they have exactly the same stopping power, so, fortunately there are no signs on having issues with the brakes.
Thanks for the help guys in advance!
Don't know how much help it would be now but I had the same problem. It was a bit low on brake fluid and I would experience the problem after the first start and if on an incline. Guessing when I step on the brake it pulls the fluid from the reservoir and the incline gets if off the low level sensor.
So I just topped it off and the warning was gone.
You having the fluid changed shoudl cover the issue but it is worth checking
